Mandelson clears tensions on Brussels jobs

Lord Mandelson on Sunday sought to bury tensions at the top of the government over Gordon Brown’s handling of negotiations in Brussels last week that saw Lady Ashton become the European Union’s foreign policy chief.

The business secretary was furious at the choice, believing the baroness has neither the experience nor the clout to project Europe’s voice on the world stage, and offered himself as a last-minute alternative.
