Australia won’t retaliate on Singapore hanging

Australia will not retaliate against Singapore in spite of growing public protests over the city-state's planned execution next week of an Australian man for drug smuggling, said John Howard, the Australian prime minister.

The controversy over the hanging of Nguyen Tuong Van, 25, has caused unusual strains in normally close bilateral relations. Singapore is seen as Australia's closest ally in south-east Asia, with the two co-operating on defence and intelligence.
