French justice chief to step down

Rachida Dati, France’s glamorous but controversial justice minister, will leave the government later this year after falling out of favour with President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Mr Sarkozy confirmed that Ms Dati would stand down and fight the European parliament elections in June for the governing centre-right UMP party. She was guaranteed a winnable seat by the president.
