The White House is coming under pressure to investigate allegations that US-trained Uzbek forces may have been involved in the massacre at Andijan last month where hundreds of civilians were reportedly killed.

Patrick Leahy, a Democrat senator, and John McCain are preparing a letter to Donald Rumsfeld, defence secretary, and Condoleezza Rice, secretary of state, that will ask which Uzbek forces were involved in the crackdown, and whether some may have received US or Nato military training or equipment, according to two Congressional aides.
