Mortgage-backed securities are shaken to the foundations

When grandees from the world of commercial mortgage-backed securities gathered for their annual conference in June 2007, the mood of optimism was almost tangible.

In the first five months of the year, a record $100bn of mortgages were repackaged and sold as bonds, as real estate makers rushed to take advantage of cheap credit.
