Canada’s Martin proposes ban on handguns

Paul Martin, the Canadian prime minister, has proposed an outright ban on handguns and tougher mandatory sentences for gun-related crimes amid growing public concern over firearms violence.

Mr Martin made the proposal on Thursday in a troubled Toronto neighbourhood as part of the ruling Liberal Party's platform for the general election on January 23.
