Refiners ration oil as they assess damage

US oil and gas companies yesterday struggled to get in touch with personnel operating the refineries hit by Hurricane Katrina, establishing emergency call centre numbers in hopes of making contact.

"We are taking every available means to reach our employees in the impacted areas, all of which are experiencing communications challenges due to the storm,'' said Peter Robertson, Chevron's vice-chairman. ExxonMobil established a similar line.
