HMV profits boosted by rivals’ demise

The collapse of former high street rivals and an aggressive push into the computer gaming market have boosted profits at HMV.

The entertainment retailer said pre-tax profit had risen by almost a fifth from £52m to £61.3m in the year to April 25, despite falling sales at Waterstone’s, its bookshop chain.
