Evo Morales, Bolivia’s first indigenous president, said on Thursday an elite police unit had foiled a plot by foreign mercenaries to assassinate him, as well as vice-president Alvaro Garcia Linera and cabinet minister minister Juan Ramon Quintana.
Three men were killed and two arrested after a half-hour gun battle in the Hotel Las Americas in Santa Cruz, an opposition stronghold in the country’s south-east.
