Share falls in big companies increase gloom

Shares in Britain’s biggest companies ended their worst week in six years on Friday after the market was jolted by a surprising jump in US unemployment

The FTSE 100 index fell nearly 2.3 per cent, taking it down more than 7 per cent on the week, as previously resilient mining and oil companies joined banks in suffering a slide in their shares.
