Adviser defends buy-out tax regime

The government's legal adviser on private equity tax rules yesterday wrote to the Commons inquiry into the industry defending the low taxation of many buy-out executives' earnings.

The letter was sent as trades unions reacted angrily to comments by Alistair Darling, the new chancellor, ruling out an immediate clampdown on tax privileges for private equity in an interview with the Financial Times.
