Self-help rescues mutuals – for now

Graham Beale, chief executive of Nationwide, was not looking actively for acquisitions when he received separate phone calls in July and August from the chief executives of two struggling smaller rivals.

Nationwide had been asked to acquire Derbyshire Building Society, the UK’s ninth-largest, and Cheshire Building Society, the 11th biggest, which were both facing losses in the first half.
