1960 – Independence from Great Britain, with Abubakar Tafawa Balewa leading a coalition government

1966 – Balewa assassinated and replaced by General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, a military officer from the southeast. In a counter coup months later, General Yakubu Gowon, seizes control. Ironsi is killed.
