José Manuel Barroso, incoming European Commission president, was warned on Tuesday to cut the powers of Rocco Buttiglione, the controversial Italian commissioner-designate, or risk losing his whole team.

Socialists and Liberals in the European parliament say Mr Buttiglione should be stripped of his oversight as justice and security commissioner on issues regarding discrimination and civilliberties.
