Latvia in turmoil as premier resigns

Latvia's premier resigned yesterdayamid public unrest over his handling of the worst recession in the European Union.

Ivars Godmanis's resignation throws the Baltic state into political turmoil less than two months after his unpopular government launched an International Monetary Fund-approved austerity programme to avert a balance of payments crisis. An IMF mission is in Riga to review the programme's progress.
