Carlsberg warns Russia over beer tax threat

Carlsberg has warned Russia that a proposed threefold increase in tax on beer would hit foreign investment and do nothing to tackle the country’s chronic problem with alcohol abuse.

Jørgen Buhl Rasmussen, chief executive of the Danish brewer, said it was “incomprehensible” that Russia was planning to triple excise duty on beer while lifting the rate for spirits by just 10 per cent.
