With his unkempt shoulder-length hair, scruffy coat and plastic bag, Tim Martin, founder and chairman of JD Wetherspoon, could be mistaken for an 11am drinker in one of his pubs.

It is an image most executives with a net worth of £115m would want to avoid. But then the 6ft 6in pub landlord is not a typical multimillionaire.
