International action urged on bank lending

Spurring banks to increase levels of lending to business and consumers was the key to economic recovery but steps must be taken internationally and not just in the UK, Alistair Darling told the Financial Times on Tuesday.

Interviewed in his Treasury office, the chancellor pledged to outline the government’s policies to solve the banking crisis within weeks and made it clear that dramatic measures had not been ruled out.
