Harsher climate shifts the goalposts for deals

Nominal prices usually rise over time, but with the S&P 500 index down nearly 40 per cent last year, $1bn will buy more than it did before.

Johnson & Johnson agreed to acquire Mentor Corporation, a breast implant maker, last month for $1.07bn - almost as much as JPMorgan paid to buy investment bank Bear Stearns in its entirety.
