At a supermarket near Venlo in the Netherlands, a logistics consultancy called Transquest is trying to make radio frequency identification (RFID) live up to its hype.

The staff here have security cards embedded with so-called "active" RFID tags, which not only provide them with access to secure areas but also track them continuously, wherever they are in the store.
