Drive to promote carbon fibre technology

Lord Mandelson is on Thursday set to announce fresh investment of £20m in a programme of technology development to encourage manufacturers to use novel composite materials based on carbon fibres.

The project is part of government efforts to urge more sectors of industry to switch into high-technology areas, strengthening their competitiveness against global rivals. The business secretary has in recent months set out an agenda of “industrial activism” to encourage private sector investment in fields where levels of activity in the UK need to be boosted.
