Hopes rise in battle against Greek wildfires

Firefighters were on Monday having some success in controlling the wildfires that have raged around Athens and elsewhere in Greece for the past four days as strong winds began to abate.

The fire department said that the only “active fire front” was in Porto Germeno, far from Athens and that the blazes close to the capital were starting to recede. However, they warned that there was still a risk of flare-ups.
