Iran overshadowed the start of George W. Bush's visit to the Middle East yesterday, as the president issued a sharp warning to Tehran over the recent stand-off between US and Iranian -vessels in the Strait of -Hormuz.

"There will be serious -consequences if they attack our ships, pure and simple. My advice to them is: Don't do it," Mr Bush said.
