Lord Browne, BP's chief executive, has put much effort into Russia lately, visiting Moscow last month and meeting Gazprom. One subject on the agenda is likely to have been the offer from TNK-BP, BP's 50 per cent-owned Russian joint venture, to give Gazprom a majority stake in a joint venture to operate the giant Kovykta field in eastern Siberia.
