France is threatening to block part of Turkey’s membership bid to join the European Union this month in the first concrete sign President Nicolas Sarkozy is serious about pushing Ankara into an arms-length relationship with Europe.

Mr Sarkozy’s officials in Brussels have expressed specific concern about allowing Turkey to start talks aimed at preparing the country to join the euro – an outcome the French president is not prepared to contemplate.
