RBS aims to repeat NatWest trick

Anyone trying to understand Royal Bank of Scotland’s determination to pursue ABN Amro has to go back to its acquisition of National Westminster bank in 2000.

At the time the Scottish lender was much smaller than its target, which it acquired following a hostile bid battle. RBS’s integration of the deal was such a success that it propelled the bank into the top league of European banking.
