France set to liberate retail sector

France will press ahead with controversial plans to liberalise its retail sector, a cornerstone of the Sarkozy government's reform agenda, according to the country's finance minister.

Christine Lagarde said that proposals to partially deregulate retailing were the most important elements of an economic modernisation programme and that the government would go ahead despite the prospect of stiff opposition from defenders of the small shopkeeper within the ruling centre-right party.
