Banks want Treasury to pay for ID theft

Britain’s biggest banks on Friday night indicated they did not expect to pay the bill if criminals committed identity theft as a result of the government blunder that saw the data of 25m people lost in the post.

The government this week confirmed that the data – including bank account details – went missing in the biggest data security breach in British history.
