Vatican watchers look for clues in chosen name

By adopting the name Benedict XVI, the new Pope may have given a clue to the direction he might like to take the Catholic Church.

The name Benedict in the Catholic Church stems from the founder of western monasticism, and current followers of the Benedictine order respect Cardinal Ratzinger for his theological acumen, and his tendency to favour a church that is more “faithful” to orthodoxy.
