President Jacques Chirac last night ruled out the possibility that he would resign if French voters ignored his advice and rejected Europe's constitutional treaty in a referendum on May 29.

But Mr Chirac warned that a No vote would halt Europe's political integration, weaken Paris's influence in the world and turn the country into the "black sheep" of Europe.
