Japan Post on Wednesday dropped plans for a joint venture with TNT, the Dutch postal operator, a move that leaves the door open for other tie-ups in international express mail services.

The failure of Japan Post and TNT to reach an agreement is a big setback for the Japanese group, which is also the world’s biggest deposit-taking institution.
