Efficient cross-border electronic payment systems should help wean Europeans off their heavy use of cash for transactions – but people should not expect a change overnight, according to Gertrude Tumpel-Gugerell, European Central Bank executive board member.
“We don’t expect in the next 20 years to reach a society where no cash is used at all,” Ms Tumpel-Gugerell said in an interview with the Financial Times.
