SPAIN HOPES TO REACH AGREEMENT OVER PLIGHT OF RESCUED AFRICAN REFUGEES

Spain was hopeful yesterday of reaching agreement with other member states over the plight of 51 Africans rescued on Friday by a Spanish fishing vessel in a case which highlights the difficulty of a clear EU-wide response to illegal migration, writes Mark Mulligan in Madrid.

The 51 people, believed to be from Eritrea, were found drifting, without food and water, in a small craft in the Mediterranean between Libya and Malta.
