Rudi Harsatanaya was surprised when he saw an election advertisement featuring Barack Obama on television last month.

What struck him was not the way Mr Obama was portrayed but the fact that he was mentioned at all. For Mr Rudi does not live in the US but half a world away in Bandung, capital of the Indonesian province of West Java.
