Supporters of Hans-Martin Tillack, a former Brussels-based journalist whose office was raided by the police, have called for an apology from European Union officials after proceedings against him by the Belgian authorities were formally ended yesterday.

Olaf, the EU's anti-fraud unit, said in March 2002 that it was investigating a journalist suspected of paying a civil servant for information. Mr Tillack's home and office were raided, and material seized, by the Belgian police. He had published reports alleging fraud in the EU's statistical agency, and said the raids were aimed at silencing criticism and exposing his sources.
