Pound fights back from early weakness

Sterling was volatile on Thursday and reversed early weakness after Standard & Poor’s cut the outlook for the UK to “negative” from “stable”.

The credit rating agency cited mounting government debt and political uncertainty about how to respond to the economic downturn but affirmed the country’s top long-term sovereign debt rating.
