Hamster eclipses EU treaty talk

A French hamster, rather than an Irish referendum, was the talk of Brussels on Thursday as European Union regulators bared their teeth in defence of one of the continent’s most endangered species.

Carefully avoiding comparisons with the EU’s Lisbon reform treaty, on which the Irish will vote next Thursday, the European Commission gave warning that “rapid and substantial action is needed to prevent the animal from becoming extinct”.
