British forces will not be able to hand over security in Afghanistan to the country’s army for “another four or five years,” the head of the UK’s armed forces said on Sunday.
Sir Jock Stirrup’s comments came amid increasing concern about the waning level of public support in Britain for the conflict in Afghanistan. A ComRes survey for the BBC this weekend found 63 per cent thought all British forces should be withdrawn as quickly as possible.
