Obama secures early win in the glamour stakes

Barack Obama was less than two when Joan Baez sang “We Shall Overcome” at a concert in segregationist Alabama, establishing her version of the old gospel standard as the anthem of the civil rights movement.

This week the grande dame of US folk became the latest celebrity to throw her support behind the senator from Illinois in his bid to secure the Democratic nomination and become the first black president of the US.
