Blair's gold at the referendum's end

France has said No to the European constitution. The treaty is, in effect, dead. Wipe clean the political calendar for 2006: Britain will not be holding a European referendum.

As they survey the damage wreaked by France, most politicians assume Tony Blair must be jubilant. After all, a British referendum was always going to be nearly impossible to win.
