Iraqi civilian deaths hit new monthly high

The tally of civilian deaths in Iraq hit a new high of 1,930 in December, suggesting sectarian violence that surged in the summer remains at peak levels.

The figures, which were reported by Reuters news agency, are the highest yet released by the Iraqi interior ministry but may be a significant underestimate as many deaths go unreported.
