India to cut excise tax on oil

P. Chidambaram, India’s finance minister, is likely to announce on Wednesday a sharp reduction in customs and excise taxes on crude oil and petrol imports in an effort to check the country’s rising inflation rate.

India’s wholesale price index last week increased to 7.6 per cent, its highest level in more than two years, partly because of the rising global price of oil and other imported commodities.
