It is a long time since former Barings boss Peter Norris was in the spotlight. He returns to it as chairman of Virgin Group just as founder Sir Richard Branson's financial services ambitions are stoked by government asset sales, such as Northern Rock.

The 54-year-old Mr Norris takes the new role after a long history with Sir Richard, helping restructure the debt-laden group in 1997 after its rapid growth.
