Business shuns US-style plea bargains on bribery

Businesses have mostly shunned a US-style plan to confess to bribery in exchange for more lenient treatment, a top anti-fraud official has admitted.

Keith McCarthy, head of anti-corruption at the Serious Fraud Office, said the effort was being hampered mainly by European Union rules that ban companies from public contracts if they are found guilty of paying backhanders.
