McCain pledges $300m for green car

John McCain has proposed a $300m government-funded prize to encourage development of more energy-efficient cars, as part of efforts to reduce US dependence on foreign oil.

The Republican presidential candidate said the cash would be available to anyone who produced a car battery that was 30 per cent more efficient than current hybrid and electric vehicle technology.
