As an elite athlete who is disabled, I am in a minority. That is even more the case now that I am also a parent. But I have never felt that my life has been anything other than normal. After Carys, my daughter, was born three years ago, I was reluctant to change anything about my life, including my sporting commitments. It is only with time that I have had to acknowledge this did mean change.
Ian, my husband, and I never really talked about starting a family. I didn't have any tests to establish whether I could have children or not - I was born with spina bifida - although I had every scan going during my nine months. I became pregnant quite quickly, miscarried, and then was pregnant again. During this time, we did discuss the issue of children with disabled mothers, but not, in any great detail, how training sessions might work with a child to consider.
