Questions resurface over banks' capital strength

Just two months ago, the Financial Services Authority stress-tested how banks would perform in a deep and severe recession before calculating how much capital each would need.

It felt as if a line had been drawn in the sand, ending the debate about whether banks had enough capital to absorb a deluge of bad debts in a downturn.
