S&P data show surge in downgrades

The number of downgrades among governments and companies hit a five-year high in the second quarter as problems deepened in the wider economy amid deteriorating financial conditions.

Downgrades jumped to 183, the most since the second quarter of 2003, while upgrades stood at 108, with banks, retailers and telecoms companies some of the biggest casualties, according to Standard & Poor’s, the ratings agency.
