EU proposes new rules for car distribution deals

Hard-hit car dealerships in Europe will be given a three-year transition period to adapt to new EU rules governing distribution arrangements in the motor industry, under proposals put forward by Brussels on Wednesday.

Officials at the European Commission said they wanted to do away with the special motor industry rules that govern the arrangements between carmakers and their primary distributors – or dealers – and exempt these from normal competition concerns.
