Sony and Toshiba are in talks aimed at adopting a common format for next generation video discs, in a move that promises a more encouraging start to the tenure of Sony's incoming chief executive, Sir Howard Stringer.

The talks, which come as he prepares to take over in June, are expected to lead to a unified format for advanced DVDs capable of recording high-quality content, including high-definition movies and video games.
